School Mailboxes Built for Campus Mail Volume

Residence halls, campus mailrooms, school administration buildings, and faculty and staff offices all need school mailboxes built for real volume, not a residential drop box. This category carries 458 units ranging from single-door options to full 60-door banks, and 457 of them lock. Nearly every unit here comes from Florence or Salsbury, the two manufacturers behind most campus mail systems in the US.

You’ll find both USPS-access and private-distribution versions across these product families, and the difference matters more than most buyers expect (we cover it in detail below). Browse our full commercial mailboxes selection to see how these units fit into a broader campus mail plan.

Types of School Mailboxes We Carry

This category includes three core mailbox families: 4C horizontal, 4B horizontal, and cluster box units. Which one fits your project usually comes down to the building itself, not personal preference, since wall depth, construction status, and site layout narrow the choice quickly.

4C Horizontal Mailboxes for Residence Halls and Lobbies

USPS-STD-4C is the current USPS standard for centralized, wall-mounted mail receptacles, and it’s been fully implemented since October 6, 2006. These 4C mailboxes are the default spec for most new residence halls and campus lobbies, required on new construction and major renovation projects.

We carry 4C horizontal mailboxes in recessed, surface mount, free-standing, and depot cabinet configurations, so the mounting choice depends on your wall cavity and floor plan rather than availability. One detail worth flagging: USPS-STD-4C sets a minimum of one parcel locker for every five tenant compartments, which matters on a campus where student parcel volume keeps climbing. Thirty-six of the 4C units on this page are ADA compliant, built to the 48-inch maximum reach requirement rather than a general compliance claim.

Both USPS-access and private-distribution versions of these units exist side by side; see the distribution section below before you filter.

4B Horizontal Mailboxes for Retrofits and Existing Walls

When a building already has mail equipment installed and the wall cavity can’t be modified, 4B horizontal mailboxes are usually the correct spec, not 4C. 4C governs new construction and major renovation; 4B covers like-for-like replacement in an existing opening. If the rough opening changes size, the project becomes a renovation, and 4C applies instead.

We stock the Florence 1400 Series in anodized aluminum, with configurations running up to 34 tenant doors plus a USPS master door. Fifteen units on this page offer rear access for rear loading, ideal for staffed mailrooms where mail is loaded from behind the wall. Confirm any replacement swap with your local postmaster first; it’s a routine step, but skipping it causes real delays on campus projects.

Cluster Box Units for Campus Housing and Outdoor Sites

Cluster box units, or CBUs, work best for apartment-style campus housing, faculty residences, and satellite housing sites with no lobby wall to recess a bank into. CBUs top out well below the 60-door ceiling seen on 4C banks: we carry them with 8, 12, 13, and 16 tenant doors, each with integrated parcel lockers and a pedestal included.

A CBU also saves indoor square footage, a real constraint on older campuses not designed around modern mail volume. CBUs are USPS’s preferred centralized delivery mode, but siting still needs approval from local postal management before installation. Don’t assume a CBU suits dormitory delivery; that depends on your building’s distribution type, covered next. Browse our USPS approved cluster mailboxes selection to compare configurations, or read how cluster mailboxes work if you’re new to the format.

Choosing Between USPS and Private Distribution for Your Campus

For dormitories and residence halls, USPS delivers mail in bulk to a designated representative of the school; postal staff do not distribute mail into individual dormitory mailboxes, and the institution handles that final step. Who fills the boxes decides which system your building needs. A residence hall bank is normally a private-distribution system, and 190 of the units on this page are configured that way.

Married student housing is the exception. It follows the same USPS rules as apartment buildings, meaning USPS delivers directly to individual boxes, so a USPS-access unit is required instead. See our apartment mailboxes for those units. Two hundred sixty-eight units here carry USPS distribution.

Administration buildings receive delivery at the building itself, not at individual offices, so staff mailboxes and faculty mail are usually routed through an internal distribution system afterward. Fraternity and sorority houses receive bulk delivery to a common box or an organization representative. Forwarding responsibility for former students, and for current students during breaks, sits with the institution rather than the Postal Service.

This distinction comes from USPS Postal Operations Manual section 631.6. Once you know which type your building needs, use the Distribution filter above to narrow the grid.

Campus building Who fills the mailbox Access type to buy Typical product
Residence hall or dormitory School staff, in bulk from USPS Private distribution 4C horizontal or 4B horizontal
Married student housing USPS carrier, to individual boxes USPS distribution 4C horizontal or CBU
Administration building School staff, after bulk delivery Private distribution 4B horizontal or 4C horizontal
Faculty and staff offices School staff, internal mail Private distribution 4B horizontal
Apartment-style campus housing USPS carrier, where approved USPS distribution Cluster box unit
Fraternity or sorority house Organization representative, in bulk Private distribution 4B horizontal or 4C horizontal

The “typical product” column is a starting point, not a guarantee. Siting and delivery mode are approved locally, so confirm the specifics with your postmaster before ordering.

Customizing School Mailboxes for Your Campus

Beyond core configuration, these units come with real customization options and custom finishes. The 4C lines carried here are available in 8 colors, and most CBU lines offer 6 (Salsbury’s Regency Decorative series offers 5). Aluminum construction covers 456 of the units here.

Engraved placards and doors help with unit identification once a bank serves dozens of residents. Tenant compartments use an individually keyed cam lock, while the master door takes a USPS Arrow lock installed by your local post office rather than shipped with the unit. Replacement locks and additional keys are also worth planning for on a campus with annual resident turnover, since re-keying an entire bank every fall gets expensive fast. For ongoing maintenance, our replacement parts and locks selection covers both. Volume orders and custom configurations qualify for bulk pricing through Request a Quote.
