Question 1

How can I make my address sign more visible?

Accepted Answer

Start with number height: 4" is the minimum, but 5-6" reads clearly from 50 feet or more. Size the plaque to your actual viewing distance from the curb. Use a high-contrast color combination, dark numbers on a light background or vice versa. A lighted or reflective plaque extends visibility after dark.

Question 2

Are illuminated house numbers worth it?

Accepted Answer

For most homeowners, yes. Lighted and reflective address plaques reduce the time it takes emergency responders and delivery drivers to locate your home at night. Rural and set-back properties benefit most, and many HOAs cite visibility rules as a reason to upgrade. If running a wire isn't practical, a traffic-grade reflective plaque like the Whitehall Providence Arch 911 provides comparable nighttime visibility with no power source required.

Question 3

Should I put my house number on the front door?

Accepted Answer

That works if the door is clearly visible from the road, but most homes benefit more from a wall plaque near the entry or a lawn marker at the curb. Front doors are frequently obscured by porches, columns, or landscaping, which makes them less reliable for deliveries and emergency response.

Question 4

Can I mount an address plaque on my mailbox?

Accepted Answer

Some address plaques and house numbers in our catalog are suitable for use on both mailboxes and homes, typically smaller adhesive or flexible-mount styles that fit standard mailbox surfaces. Not all models are compatible with mailboxes. If you need a plaque specifically for a mailbox door or side panel, check the individual product page for compatibility details or call our experts at (866) 717-4943.

Question 5

Are address plaques USPS compliant?

Accepted Answer

USPS does not certify specific plaque products, but it does require that addresses be visible from the road. Most address plaques meet that standard when installed with 4"+ number height, high contrast between numbers and background, and an unobstructed sightline to the street. See the USPS address visibility guidelines for the published standard.

Question 6

How are address plaques installed?

Accepted Answer

Most wall-mount plaques include pre-drilled holes and hardware, typically screws and wall anchors. Mark your mounting points, drill to the recommended depth, insert the anchors, and drive the screws. Total install time is 15-30 minutes with a standard drill. Lawn-mount plaques include stakes that push directly into the ground; wetting hard soil before inserting makes placement easier.

Question 7

What is the difference between an address plaque and individual house numbers?

Accepted Answer

An address plaque is a single sign unit with numbers integrated into a finished backing, installed in one piece. Individual house numbers are separate characters mounted directly to a wall or surface, with spacing and layout determined at install. Plaques install faster and present a more finished, cohesive look. Individual numbers offer greater layout flexibility and are generally lower in cost per character.
